Volunteers make our world go around! Their generosity of time, skills and spirit makes it possible for us to do what we do - whether that’s sorting and preparing supplies for distribution, collecting and transporting goods, or sharing professional expertise to increase our reach and impact.

Jennie Herrington has been volunteering with us at Save Our Supplies for almost two years in the sorting room of our Brisbane warehouse, where she quality checks, sorts and stores large volumes of incoming medical supplies, readying them for their destinations across Asia-Pacific. 

“It was pure luck that I found the opportunity; I was searching for something that meant I could help people, and I thought, that looks right up my alley, being in the medical field as well”. 

Having been involved with volunteering on and off throughout her career in nursing and at aged care facilities, including a stint in Cambodia on a construction project, Jennie was looking for a volunteer role where she could feel a sense of purpose, as well as expand her social circle, after a move from Western Australia to Queensland. 

“As a retiree, and having moved to a new city, I was looking for connection and purpose. I love the interaction with the staff”.

Jennie is deeply passionate about the mission of SOS, and her motivation for working with SOS comes from the dual appeal of supporting others that need goods we aren’t using at the same time as protecting the environment.

“Even as a nurse I didn’t realise the extent of product not being used – it’s wonderful to see the word is spreading about the work of SOS”.

The theme of this years’ National Volunteer Week is Your Year to Volunteer. We asked Jennie what she would say to anyone who is thinking about getting involved in their community by volunteering:

“Give it a go! What you get out of it is so much more than what you put in. I come away from a shift and just feel so fulfilled - I just love it.”
